Tramadol and Serotonin Syndrome
What you should know about mixing Tramadol and Serotonergic medications
Serotonin Syndrome is a severe reaction that can be life threatening to individuals who combine certain type of medications without first consulting their doctor. Symptoms can range from shivers and diarrhea to seizures and even death if not treated. People who have experienced Serotonin Syndrome have also reported severe rigidity in their muscles. Tramadol is one medication that can cause Serotonin Syndrome if mixed with other drugs
Many people buy and take Tramadol for a wide variety of reasons due to the fact that this medication is effective, inexpensive and generally well tolerated. What most do not understand is that although Tramadol has a low rate of side effects among its users, it can be dangerous when combined with any type of serotonergic medicine. A serotonergic medicine is any type of drug that directly effects the production of serotonin in the brain. This includes but is not limited to the following:
-
Antidepressants
- Any type of SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as:
- Celexa
- Paxil
- Prozac
- Lexapro
- Zoloft or any drugs containing the following:
- Mirtazapine
- Venlafaxine
- Tricylcics
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
Street drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines and LSD can also cause Serotonin Syndrome when mixed with Tramadol. Because of the extremely harmful nature that is associated with these types of drugs, it is highly advisable to seek professional treatment if you are taking any illegal drug whatsoever.
It is always advisable to consult your doctor first before taking any medication or combined medications. If however you choose to buy Tramadol without consulting your primary care physician then you should never mix this drug in any way with any other medications. Doing so can cause severe harm and even death if not treated immediately.
